About Adoption

The Greyhound Rescue Society of Texas, Inc. dba Greyhounds Unlimited primarily considers adoption applicants in Texas, within a broad radius of the Dallas–Fort Worth area. Applicants outside this area may be referred to other greyhound adoption organizations.

Please review Greyhounds Unlimited Adoption Guidelines below. If you agree to comply with these requirements, you may proceed with completing the adoption application.

Adoption Guidelines

The following guidelines must be followed if you adopt a greyhound through Greyhounds Unlimited:

  1. Your greyhound must always be kept on a leash when outdoors unless in a securely fenced area.
  2. Identification tags must remain on your greyhound at all times, including a tag displaying your address and phone number, as well as the Greyhounds Unlimited identification tag.
  3. Your greyhound must be kept indoors except when walking, exercising, or relieving itself.
  4. Your greyhound must never be tied to any object.
  5. You understand that your greyhound has not been raised in a home environment and will require time, patience, and understanding to adjust. Physical punishment is never acceptable.
  6. You agree to keep your greyhound current on all vaccinations and medical care.
  7. You agree to keep your greyhound solely as a companion animal and never use it for racing, breeding, or laboratory research.
  8. If your greyhound becomes lost for any reason, you agree to immediately notify Greyhounds Unlimited, local law enforcement, and animal control.
  9. If you can no longer keep your greyhound, you agree to return it to Greyhounds Unlimited so that an appropriate new home can be found.
  10. You agree to allow a Greyhounds Unlimited representative to conduct follow-up phone calls and/or home visits.
  11. If at any time the greyhound is not being provided proper care according to these guidelines, Greyhounds Unlimited reserves the right to reclaim the dog.

Adoption Requirements

All greyhounds adopted through The Greyhound Rescue Society of Texas, Inc. dba Greyhounds Unlimited are spayed or neutered and have received their annual vaccinations. Each dog has been tested for heartworms and is currently on heartworm prevention.

Your newly adopted greyhound will come with:

  • A Premier collar and leash designed specifically for greyhounds
  • A Greyhounds Unlimited identification tag
  • A greyhound muzzle

Adopters must agree to keep their greyhound free of parasites, properly vaccinated, on heartworm prevention, and primarily indoors.

If you intend for your greyhound to live primarily outdoors, we recommend considering another breed. Greyhounds have very little body fat, making them sensitive to both cold and hot weather. A good rule of thumb is that if you are uncomfortable outdoors, your greyhound likely is as well.

Greyhounds are highly social dogs and generally prefer to be indoors with their families. As sighthounds, they should never be allowed off leash in an unenclosed area. While a securely fenced yard is beneficial for exercise and bathroom breaks, greyhounds can also adapt very well to apartment or condominium living when provided with regular walks and exercise.

Adoption Fees

Effective June 18, 2026, our adoption fees are:

  • Greyhounds under 8 years of age: $550
  • Greyhounds 8 years of age and older: $500

A two-week trial period is provided. If the greyhound is returned during this period, 50% of the adoption fee will be refunded. After the two-week trial period, adoption fees are non-refundable.

Adopting a greyhound is a significant commitment that should be carefully considered. Responsible greyhound ownership requires both financial and emotional dedication for many years. Greyhounds thrive as members of the family and want to be included in everyday life.

One of the best ways to learn about the breed is by attending one of our Meet & Greet events listed on our monthly schedule. Once you decide that a greyhound is the right companion for you, complete and submit an online adoption application.

After your application is received, a volunteer from Greyhounds Unlimited will contact you to discuss your application and answer any questions. If approved, arrangements will be made for you to meet available greyhounds that best fit your lifestyle and household.

The time between approval and placement varies depending on the availability of greyhounds that match your preferences and the transportation arrangements involved. We will work closely with you to ensure the best possible match for both you and your new companion.
